To Rule The Waves
How the British Navy Shaped the Modern World
2004 by Arthur Herman
British navy is one of most reputable institutions in the world. From 16th century to most part of 20th century, so many important events are shaped by the British navy.
First of all, British navy defended British isles as well as British empire against invasions, stretching from Phillip II's Spain, Louis Iv's France, maritime empire Holland, Napoleon's France, Kaiser Wilhelm II's Germany and Hitler's Germany. People (heroic captains/admirals, skillful sailors), technology, institution, tradition and sometimes luck had been kept the British Navy on top over so many conflicts.
Started with piracy and slave trade, later on dedicated to clear piracy and stop slave trade, involved in gunboat diplomacy, British navy has done so many things, good or bad. It helped to expand the colonies in North America, West Indies, India, Africa, etc. It promoted trade, commerce and even science.
So many inspiring figures in British Navy such as Captain Drake, Captain Cook, Horatio Nelson helped to form one of the characters of English people: grace under pressure and courage under fire.
The book is well written with plentiful of historical materials. Highly recommended.
